The Tufts University office of Government & Community relations, in partnership with University College, is pleased to offer a scholarship program to Medford and Somerville high school students interested in taking an undergraduate class for credit at Tufts University.

The program will award two students each semester (one student from Medford High School and one student from Somerville High School) a scholarship to take an approved undergraduate class for credit at Tufts University through Courses at Tufts for High Schoolers.  Each scholarship will cover tuition and fees. Two Scholarships will be offered each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).  A typical three-credit course in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University costs $2,970 ($990 per credit).

Requirements

Identification and selection of the eligible student from each district will be at the discretion of the school principal, or principal’s designee and should take into consideration the following:

  1. Student must be a Junior or Senior in good academic standing as determined by the school.
  2. Student must demonstrate academic ability and maturity to participate in a college level course and proficiency in English, as determined by the principal, or their designee. Student must submit a high school transcript.
  3. Student must demonstrate their interest in taking a class at Tufts in the form of a letter or essay. This letter or essay should indicate at least one class that the student has an interest in taking.
  4. Student must demonstrate a financial need for scholarship, to be determined at the discretion of the Medford/Somerville High School principal or their designee.

Other

  1. Courses must be approved as open to high school students and listed on the Courses at Tufts platform.
  2. Schools will nominate a student prior to the start of classes, with a target of one-month prior to the start of term allow time to process paperwork.
  3. Students who receive a scholarship will be requested to fill out additional enrollment forms and other required documentation.
  4. Students may only be awarded this scholarship once.  If a student has been awarded, they are not eligible for this scholarship in subsequent semesters.

Application Timeline

  • Summer 2023 Session 1 - Student Nomination due by May 7, 2023 (registration deadline, May 21)
  • Summer 2023 Session 2 - Student Nomination due by June 18, 2023 (registration deadline, July 2)

How to Nominate a Student

Each high school's principal or designee may nominate one student for this program each term (Fall, Spring, Summer). Please download and complete this form and email it to precollege@tufts.edu. We encourage each school to identify at least one back up nominee in the event that the first nominee is ineligible or unable to participate.
